PHP Under the Hood with Davey Shafik and Lightning Talks
We're going in the deep end with September's meetup. Davey Shafik is going to (remotely) present PHP: Under The Hood
Performance issues can be caused by many things, from database interactions, web services, disk i/o and, less frequently, the code itself.
We would typically turn to a profiler like xhprof to diagnose these issues, but what if the bottleneck is PHP itself, where do you turn?
This talk will take that inspection a step further and look under the hood of PHP, at the C internals of how things tick.
This talk covers what every PHP developer should know about their tools — like what's really going on when you use double quotes vs single quotes.
If you’ve ever wanted to know exactly what your code is doing, and why ++$i is faster than $i++, this talk is for you.
Note: This is an advanced talk, you should be extremely familiar with PHP and have some experience with profiling if you are to get the most from this talk.
Davey Shafik is a full time PHP Developer with 12 years experience in PHP and related technologies. A Community Engineer for Engine Yard, he has written three books (so far!), numerous articles and spoken at conferences the globe over.
Davey is best known for his books, the Zend PHP 5 Certification Study Guide and PHP Master: Write Cutting Edge Code, and as the originator of PHP Archive (PHAR) for PHP 5.3.
What else is on the agenda?
Lightning talks, presented by community members. That's you!
So, this is a shout out to all the members, asking you to present a lightning talk, 5-10 minutes, and we'll have a moderator to encourage a discussion after each talk. I like this format, because it gives people a chance to practice an idea for a talk, and gives us a good range of topics in a single night.
What to talk about in your lightning talk? Over the months we've had talks on:
• PHP Framework shoot-out
• Infrastructure as code
• PHP Testing
• Web Performance
• Product management for a startup
• Hack and HHVM
• PHP versions and upgrading
So the scope is all this and anything else, that our PHP audience would be interested in.
If we get too many people willing to talk, we'll divide the talks and do some next month.
What if I'm hungry and thirsty?
Thanks to our sponsors Engine Yard and Hostelworld we'll have beer and pizza on the night.
